These handmade and fair trade sari journals are made by a small family business in Rajasthan, India. These journals have 30 pages of unlined khadda paper. Khadda is recycled cotton that has been left over from the massive garment industry in India. The is stunning, textured and very easy to write on, alternatively, we don’t advise using fountain pens as the ink can spread. It is handmade and doesn’t contain any chemicals as we use only unbleached cotton. The paper is made by charity in rural Rajasthan that promotes women’s education and their social standing in the rural villages.

We are a Fair Trade company and continuously visit our suppliers to ensure the highest standards are met. We quality control all our products to ensure that you only receive the best. We pay our suppliers 50% upfront and send money to them whenever they need it. We never send anything back or not pay for damaged goods.

The saris come from Varanasi, probably the most religious cities in the World and a centre of excellence for sari making. We use new saris as we cannot ensure the cleanliness of recycled saris and cannot all the time get the correct styles and designs. These journals have been expertly crafted using a mixture of contemporary and traditional methods and the pages have been hand bound.

Further travels have led to us finding more great Fair Trade suppliers in India, Nepal and in Sri Lanka too, including our elephant dung paper producer!

We only work with small family businesses, community incentives, charities and accredited Fair Trade organisations and our promise is that every product we sell is Fair Trade as set out by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). All our products are handmade by skilled artisans using sustainable or recycled materials wherever conceivable.

It is an absolute must to us that we have a mutually beneficial relationship with our fair trade suppliers. We love and respect the people we work with and have got to know them and their families well over the years and imagine them true friends. It is all the time a joy to visit them and catch up on all the news.

Our Ethics

We have 3 golden rules for everything that we do:

  • Everything must be Fair Trade
  • We should have as little environmental have an effect on as possible
  • We should make a positive have an effect on wherever we can

We only work with producers we know and visit regularly to ensure that we will live up to our Fair Trade promise. Our producers are small family businesses and charities we work with to Fair Trade guidelines and World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) accredited co-operatives.All the products we sell are made using natural, sustainable resources. These can be the waste products of larger industry, for example, our Khadda paper is made from the cotton left over from the massive garment industry in India. Or it can be a more extreme sort of recycling like our elephant dung paper – no, it doesn’t smell but it does produce a wonderful natural paper!

Our Producers

All our beautiful sari and leather stationery has been handmade by the same family business in India since Paper High started in 2001. Over the years we have formed a very special friendship and are proud of how much we have been able to achieve together. We design all the products together and value their expertise.

All the products are made by hand by skilled artisans, using a mixture of traditional and contemporary techniques. When we first started out the business employed 3 artisans to make our products. The demand for these lovely products has grown so much that they now employ over 35 artisans producing beautiful products exclusively for Paper High, with home workers in local villages too.

All the products are made with khadda paper, an acid-free, tree friendly paper made from recycled cotton left over from the massive garment industry. The paper is handmade by a local charity that supports women’s education and social development in rural villages in Rajasthan.
